A trip to Antarctica: the beginning of a career
Jose María Sobral was an important local geologist and scientist. He was born in Gualeguaychú on 14th April, in 1880. His childhood home is still at 633 San Martin Street. Sobral devoted himself mainly to geological research for many years of his life, but he is best known for taking part in a trip to Antarctica in 1901 with an international crew. Sobral was in Antarctica for two years, without the possibility of returning to his country due to the sinking of the ship in which he had arrived there. During his time there, he made important measurements and explorations, contributing to the science field of Argentina.
