The Castle on Libertad Island

More than a hundred years of history come to life in “El Castillo”(The Castle), one of the oldest and most important cultural points in the city. Surrounded by Libertad island's lush greenery, it commands a beautiful view of the Gualeguaychu River.

The Castle was built in 1920 and belonged to Maria Eloisa D’Elia, a teacher from Concepcion del Uruguay, which is a city near Gualeguaychu. She lived with her family there until the great 1959 flood forced her out of the Castle.

Fascinating ghost stories are told about this place. One of these stories involves the ghost of a woman who worked there and was found beheaded in one of the bedrooms of "El Castillo".

Another important historical fact is that Justo Jose de Urquiza, one of the most important politicians of Argentine history, lived on the island, where the castle stands, during the struggle between Federales and Unitarios.

"El Castillo de la isla Libertad" is a popular landmark of Gualeguaychu and a favourite holiday snap.

Lapalma Museum

Built in 1830, Azotea de Lapalma is the place where one of Gualeguaychú’s most famous secret is hidden. This enormous pink three-storey house is situated on Jujuy Street. It has got a front garden with a giant magnolia tree.

Azotea de Lapalma belonged to Francisco Lapalma’s family in the early 20th century, and was later purchased by Gualeguaychu’s local council in 1978. The building became popular due to an unsolved mystery that involved Isabel Frutos, who was a young girl that died of love 158 years ago. Legend has it that her silhouette can be seen in the roof terrace.

For those who are interested in Gualeguaychu’s folklore, Azotea de Lapalma is a highly recommended place to see.

Gualeguaychú: Corsodromo (Carnival Venue)

Video by Antonella Denis, Magalí Irigoytia, Agustín Gomez and Camila Villagra

Dancing, music, a colorful display of costumes and immense crafted floats…this is what you can see in Gualeguaychú every summer from the beginning of January to the beginning of March. This is the tradition of the carnival parade.

This festivity was first celebrated along the Main Street for a period of 4 days and later transferred to the Rocamora Avenue. However, since 1997, the Carnival has been celebrated at the former Railway Station. Initially, the railway belonged to the “General Urquiza Railway” line, but its services were cancelled in the late 80s when the tracks were removed from the city and the station was turned into a museum. It later became the “Corsodromo”, a carnival venue and the first of its kind in the area. The Corsodromo is one of the most important landmarks in the country.
